Nautical Jewelry & Accessories

About Us

At Trade Winds Nautical we design jewelry and accessories with the sailing enthusiast in mind.  Each piece is beautifully designed with skilled, quality, workmenship and comes with my personal stamp of approval.  Our handset Genuine Ruby and Emerald Trademark represents port and starboard. Just a reminder of what it means to love and live the sailing life.

My name is Paul Sellon and Trade Winds Nautical has been a dream of mine for many years. You seeI've been in the jewelry business my whole life. No, really – my whole life.

My dad started the family business, Cellini, just after I was born – right here in Rhode Island. At the time, Rhode Island was known as “The Jewelry Capital of the World," and in our home, jewelry was a family affair. Dad would come home with the latest jewelry collections, lay them on the kitchen table and ask for our family's insight before flying down to New York with the new line. Everyone had input. In New York, he met with buyers from all over the country, including major department stores like Macy's, Gimbels, Filene's, Robinsons and Marshall Field's.

I started working in the factory at Cellini during my summer vacation when I turned 13. The factory is where I learned all there was to the jewelry business from the ground up. Literally, from the ground up: my first job was sweeping the floors. Later, I learned all the essential jewelry-making skills: casting, plating, polishing, model-making, design, you name it. I then went on to graduate from a world-renowned school for diamonds and gems: The Gemological Institute of America, or GIA.

My brother and I took over the family business in 1981. And what a business it was! We grew to over 100 employees and dealt with every major retailer in the U.S., from Walmart to J.C. Penney and everyone in between. I traveled the world. Places like Bangkok, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Vicenza and Paris. Wherever I needed to travel in order to find the next “big item”, the latest designs or new suppliers, I'd go there. We had an office on Fifth Avenue, entertained with buyers and had a blast at the jewelry shows. It was fun, exciting and hard, hard work. I wouldn't have changed a thing.

Unfortunately over time, like all good things, it did begin to change. Corporate cultures, deal making and competition became fierce. The shine was rubbing off; I needed a change. So after 38 years with Cellini we sold the company and I decided to retire from the race and kick back a little…oh, who am I kidding? I'm too young to retire! Retirement is for golfers and I stink at golfing!

So what was next for me? Well, I still enjoyed what was at the heart of the jewelry business, making great jewelry. And my wife and I have always loved sailing and the sailing life. So I decided to combine the two, take what I know, with what I love. This is how Trade Winds Nautical came to be.

At Trade Winds Nautical we design mens and womens nautical jewelry and accessories for the sailing enthusiast. It's comprised of pieces myself or friends of mine would want to wear. Whether you're a costal cruiser, professional racer, day sailor or live-aboard, Trade Winds Nautical is for you. Each piece is beautifully designed with skilled, quality workmanship and comes with my personal stamp of approval, our hand set, genuine ruby and emerald trademarks, representing port and starboard.  Just our reminder of what it means to love and live the sailing life.

So that's me, that’s my story: from factory floor-sweeper to family-owned businessman to doing what I love and living the dream. Trade Winds Nautical has become a big part of my story. I hope you'll let it become a part of yours, too.
